Risk, Crash and Freedom at Cory Helford

30 Apr

Checked out the Opening of ” Blurring the Lines” at Corey Helford Gallery in Culver City tonight.

Curated by Roger Gastman of JUXTAPOZ magazine and co-curator of MoCA’s “Art in the Streets” exhibition.

Some of Risky’s sketches were pretty cool

It was a really odd crowd of middle-aged wealthy folks and some younger folk. I don’t know where Graffiti is going really.

cool table made of Rusto Fats.

Big Lichtenstein inspired D*Face wall outside.

MOCA @ THE GEFFEN, Down Town Los Angeles
I can’t even begin to explain how important I feel that this exhibition is. The first major museum to acknowledge street art and the graffiti movement as a major art movement. To me this installation establishes a precedent of the art movements to come. The people involved in this exhibition have all been a part of an underground “street art” culture linked deeply to hip-hop, punk rock, skate boarding, gang banging, and tattooing. For the majority of these artists graffiti has been a taboo subculture for them. For the people in my generation we were more or less raised acknowledging graffiti and street art as a legitimate art form. 50% of the people at my high school had a tag name. We are the graffiti generation and soon we are all going to be involved in a post-graffiti movement of some kind that is far beyond what I could possibly envision at this point. Keep the movement moving. Keep fucking shit up.
